The Arquivo Público Mineiro is an icon of Minas Gerais, being the oldest cultural institution in the state. Created in 1895, on the city of Ouro Preto, moved to Belo Horizonte in 1901, occupying temporary buildings and setting up from 1938, on João Pinheiro Avenue, 372.
Located next to the Museu Mineiro, the building is characterized like the era of eclecticism, was built to serve as residence to the secretary of finances from the Comissão Construtora da Nova Capital, in 1897. Surrounded by gardens with external fences, its facade still retains that initial characteristic of housing.
The Arquivo Público Mineiro is recognized for its pickup work, custody, management, preservation and access to private documents of public interest and the archival collection of the Administração Pública Estadual. In its dependencies, visitors have access to thousands of documents, dating back to colonial times, imperial and republican. The main highlights are the photographic collection, a collection of maps produced in the eighteenth century, the routine records of Inconfidência Mineira and its many characters and also a set of films that brings together short documentaries and ceremonies that marked the history of Minas Gerais over the XX century.
The Arquivo Público Mineiro also has a library specialized in history and archives of Minas Gerais, collecting about ten thousand five hundred titles, which two thousand five hundred are considered rare and precious works. Appears in this collection reduced editions and printings, or even illegal works, titles published in early press releases and classics of historiography of Minas Gerais.
